2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo DCT Automatic Review The common new car releases with much excitement and then goes three or Four decades with few changes until its “shiny new” would use off. After a few mid-cycle developments, it then military on for a few more decades until, usually, it is changed by an all-new edition. So reasoning would declare that a given car would be best at the end of its lifestyle, having gone through all the developments it can.
So along comes the black-painted 2016 Cars Veloster Turbocompresseur examined here, de facto inheritor of Hyundai’s efficiency top now that the Genesis vehicle is gone and the N efficiency product has yet to discharge. Presented as a 2012 style and developed on the bone fragments of the previous-generation Elantra, the Veloster is now in its evening decades. The irregular three-door hatchback never experienced the common middle age renew, yet the car has been continuously enhanced, best of all when the trout-faced 201-hp Turbocompresseur came for 2013. For 2016, Cars included a Turbocompresseur Shift Version and changed the normal six-speed automated gearbox choice with a new seven-speed dual-clutch automated on Turbocompresseur designs (non-Turbo Velosters have provided a six-speed DCT from the start). Turbos also get new game chairs, broader front side tires (now 225/40R-18), and an electroluminescent evaluate group. We examined a manual-equipped Shift Version previously, but this analyze showed our first chance to invest amount of time in a Turbocompresseur with the new DCT.
This is all appealing in the “best at the end of its run” feeling, and we were expecting that the dual-clutch transmitting might meaningfully push the Veloster Turbocompresseur in the hot-hatch route. As it ends up, that reasoning does not implement. The Turbocompresseur DCT completed some of the most severe efficiency figures of any Turbocompresseur style we’ve examined up to now, which contains these Shift Version and a couple of Turbos in 2013—one guide, one automated.
First, the new DCT is no risk to the world’s best. The sharp, immediate upshifts and satisfied, throttle-blippy downshifts we’ve come to love in Volkswagens and Porsches with this transmitting technological innovation are especially missing. In generate, the dual-clutch seems like a frequent automated, with slurry changes and a common desire not to downshift until you’ve crushed the accelerator. Sport method livens things up only a little bit. Manual changes can be called by using either squeaky nasty paddles behind the leader or the move handle. The latter, irritatingly, is expected away from the motorist to interact with this method (perhaps it was developed for motorists who sit on the right?) and provides upshifts by nudging the handle ahead and downshifts rearward—the opposite of what most motorists naturally choose. Unfortunately, in no method does the DCT act with real decisiveness. Capture the motor without the turbo rotating, and the transmitting can experience as indecisive in its deliberations as the developers who couldn’t choose between two and four gates. With move lag and turbo lag, what seems like an epoch can successfully pass before the car minds instructions from the driver’s right feet. At least the turbocharged style appears to be excellent, if synthetically so, as tailpipe rumble is elevated through the sound system.

One payoff—more essential to Hyundai’s regulating conformity than to the customer, in this era of inexpensive gasoline—is that the conversion from the normal six-speed automated to this seven-speed DCT improves EPA fuel-economy scores by 2 mpg in the town, now making 27/33 mpg city/highway. In our of course competitive responsibility pattern, however, we obtained 23 mpg in combined generating, which is 1 mpg more intense than the 24 we documented for both the 2016 manual-transmission Shift Version and the 2013 automated. It wasn’t difficult to get this car to show better figures, well above 30 mpg, on its journey computer during road generating, but it takes unusually large accelerator information to get it to go away from a quit, so in-town generating took its cost on our frequent.
Which factors up why the DCT didn’t provide at the monitor, either. From a halt, this Veloster multiplied to 60 mph in 7.2 a few moments, 100 mph in 19.8, and through the quarter-mile indicate in 15.6 a few moments at 91 mph. The manual-equipped 2016 Shift Version hit those objectives in 6.7 a few moments, 16.8 a few moments, and 15.0 a few moments at 94 mph. The 2013 Turbocompresseur automated did the same in 6.8 a few moments, 20.4 a few moments, and 15.4 a few moments at 91 mph.
The DCT Turbocompresseur is merely a slug out of the gap, demanding high-rpm involvement to get it to discharge with any emergency at all. Most people don’t generate that way. Once it’s moving, the DCT’s 5-to-60-mph determine of 7.7 a few moments (versus 8.0 for the 2013 automatic) and its appearance at 120 mph completely 3.5 a few moments earlier tell us that the new transmitting does indeed hand equipment off more easily. The time doesn’t lie, but the car seems no faster in frequent generating.
While its front side, motivated tires now use broader rubberized, we suspicious this Veloster would have worked out better with the grippy 215/40R-18 Michelin Lead Extremely Sport summer time tires that were on the 2013 automated we examined. Those tires—a $1200 choice provided only in 2013—not only assisted it accomplish faster off-the-line releases but also held the skidpad tenaciously to the monitor of 0.90 g in comparison to this car’s 0.85 g. With summer time season tires, 70-to-zero-mph stopping took only 161 legs in comparison with the guide cars’ 173- and 185-foot prevents and this DCT version’s basically bad 191 legs. At least tires are one of the few developments entrepreneurs can create themselves after making the casino dealer.
2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo DCT Automatic Features
So it’s a poor entertainer. As it ends up, it’s just average about, too. Most who forced it mentioned an unnecessarily severe drive and unexplained, overboosted guiding with a propensity to walk on the road. Apart from the classy-looking new indicators, the medial side planning is a throwback to 10 years ago, with a variety of nasty and cupholders that absence internal holds to keep consume bins in place. Regardless of one’s visual breathing difficulties, it’s difficult to see out of this thing with its low ceiling and dense support beams preventing external perspective in nearly every route. The new game chairs are wonderful except for the indignity of showing the term “turbo” on their part improves.
Staffers are combined externally, too. Some think it looks unique and fun, while others experience it tries too difficult, focusing distinction just in the interest of being different. The small returning passenger-side entrance isn’t suitable for accessibility to the rear again chair, but it’s certainly simpler than using the single, longer entrance on the driver’s part. Once set up, two average-size grownups fit reasonably well returning there, at some point with valuable little area between their leads and the rear again cup. A Veloster also can keep a nice 16 cubic legs of things in its strong freight area, once you’ve raised it over the top sill.
Our Veloster came with the $2700 Technology program, that delivers a spectacular sunroof (giving us an excellent perspective out one way, at least), automated heating and cooling, routing, HD Stereo, automated headlamps, opposite receptors, and Hyundai’s Red Weblink telematics system with a three-month analyze. A set of carpeted ground pads for $125 introduced the overall to $27,460, making this the priciest Veloster we’ve examined. We can think of many opponents for which we’d rather fall that kind of coin: The Nova GTI with the DSG begins at $26,915, or one could try to find one of the last Lexus tC Launch Sequence 10.0 designs, which were provided a few months ago at $25,135 in automated type. The 268-hp Subaru WRX CVT might create a successful expand at $30,890 in order to get the extra power and all-wheel grip.
We’ve had 5 decades to heated up to the Veloster, and Cars has had the same period of a chance to ensure it is better at the end of its lifestyle than in the start. Neither has occurred. We have greater desires for the Elantra Sport automobile that’s coming with more than 200 horse power, an optionally available seven-speed dual-clutch automated (which hopefully performs better than this one does), and the advantages of the Elantra’s new system. The only Veloster feature it apparently will absence is funkiness, however you value that.
